Title |
Dynamics and impacts of marine viruses infecting phytoplankton

Abstract
|
Viruses cannot grow alone and need a host to replicate. The tremendous amount of microbial life in the ocean represents a massive source of susceptible hosts for viruses to replicate. Viruses of microbes can be an essential driver of mortality for their hosts, and therefore, they can modify microbial community dynamics and biogeochemical cycles. During this seminar, I will present work on virus-microbe dynamics in the ocean that combine results from experiments, oceanic observations, and mathematical models. Specifically, this presentation will be centred around two questions: 1) what are the level of host mortality due to grazing and viral lysis? and 2) what is the impact of abiotic factors, principally temperature, on virus-microbe interactions, their dynamics and distribution in the global ocean?
