Title Molecular mechanistic analysis of the tolerance response to copper stress in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii
Abstract
Photosynthetic organisms, including plants, cannot avoid exposure to heavy metals due to increasing industrial demand. However, the stress response mechanisms to essential heavy metals are not well understood. Therefore, we are analyzing the stress response of the model organism Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii) to Cu2+ exposure, which has been observed to be the most toxic among essential heavy metals under our experimental conditions. Our stress response analysis showed that Cu2+ exposure induced decolorization and inhibited proliferation. In addition, various other toxicities were observed in C. reinhardtii upon Cu2+ exposure. However, C. reinhardtii incubated for over one week with Cu2+, showed re-greening and re-proliferation, suggesting that C. reinhardtii could acquire tolerance and recover. Focusing on this tolerance response to copper stress, we attempted to elucidate the molecular mechanism using gene expression analyses. This seminar will present these results, including preliminary data.
