Predicting Microbial Phenotypes through Genome-Scale Metabolic Modeling
Abstract
Despite the rapid accumulation of microbial genome sequences, predicting microbial phenotypes remains a major challenge. Genome-scale metabolic modeling provides a systems biology framework that links genome information to cellular physiology and enables the generation of testable biological hypotheses. In this seminar, I will introduce how genome-scale metabolic models can be integrated with omics data and experimental validation to investigate microbial phenotypes, using Leptospira as a case study. These examples illustrate how computational modeling can reveal metabolic adaptations and guide biological discovery beyond what can be inferred from genome sequences alone. Although the focus is on Leptospira, the concepts are broadly applicable to diverse microorganisms and highlight the value of systems biology in modern microbiology.
