Abstract

The Japanese Society of Bioinformatics (JSBi) was founded in 1999 for promoting researches and educational activities on bioinformatics as well as for promoting the relevant technologies and industries in Japan. It was two years before the Bioinformatics Center was established. The first president of the JSBi was Prof. Kanehisa. He also founded the GIW conference (formerly named Genome Informatics Workshop, now named International Conference on Genome Informatics). The General Meeting of the society had been held as a part of the GIW conference until 2006. JSBi is now applying to a nonprofit organization (NPO) for enhancing its responsibility and accountability. For the future of this field, the activities related to Bioinformatics, including those of the Bioinformatics Center and the JSBi, should be more and more demanded for the achievement of scientific and technology progresses.
